Celebrating the Achievements of the Suffragettes
4 - 6.30 pm Council Chamber, The Quadrant, Cobalt Business Park
The aim of the IWD event is to celebrate the achievements of women - and the continuing struggle for equality for women.  North Tyneside Women's Voices is delighted that members of the North Tyneside youth council have wanted to commemorate the work of the suffragettes and particularly the memory of our north east heroine Emily Wilding Davison who died trying to put the Votes for Women banner on the king's horse at the Derby in 1913.  But the celebration also raises questions about whether women have achieved equality yet and explores some of the issues which young women still face because they are female through workshop discussions.
The event will be chaired by Cllr Lesley Spillard.  The speakers are all local women:  Gill Alexander, Strategic Director Children, Young People and Learning, Mary Glindon MP for North Tyneside and Karen Lewis Archer, Sports Development Officer.  They will be telling their stories about how they got to be where they are now.  Mayor Linda Arkley will close the event.

Join Me On The Bridge: International Women's Day @ Northumbria
Friday 8 March, 4.00pm, Northumbria University Footbridge
Join Me on the Bridge is now in its third year, it began in 2010 when women from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) met on the bridge that joins their two countries.  Each group carried two halves of a banner, and when they met they tied them together to reveal the message: 'women are building bridges of peace.'
So, grab a placard and one end of a banner and head to the Northumbria University Footbridge (bridge with entrance to Camden Court) on 8 March to stand in solidarity with women struggling across the globe and to celebrate the achievements of women in the United Kingdom.
